Overview
LGND Ar Mathor™ is a premium biological filtration medium engineered to provide exceptional long-term biofiltration for freshwater and marine aquariums. Manufactured from a highly porous inert mineral structure, each piece offers an enormous internal and external surface area capable of supporting dense colonies of beneficial bacteria.
Unlike conventional plastic bio-media that relies primarily on external surfaces, LGND Ar Mathor™ contains an interconnected network of microscopic and macroscopic pores. These internal pathways create ideal habitats for both aerobic nitrifying bacteria and low-oxygen denitrifying bacteria. As a result, the media supports the complete biological filtration process, helping convert toxic ammonia into nitrite, nitrite into nitrate, and ultimately assisting in the natural reduction of accumulated nitrate.
The highly porous structure maximises bacterial colonisation while maintaining unrestricted water flow throughout the filter. Because the media is completely inert, it will not alter pH, hardness, alkalinity, or other important water parameters. It is suitable for use in canister filters, sump systems, trickle filters, internal filters, and other biological filtration applications.
LGND Ar Mathor™ is designed as a permanent filtration medium and does not dissolve, degrade, or require routine replacement. With proper maintenance, it can provide many years of reliable biological filtration while helping maintain a stable and healthy aquatic environment.
Available Sizes: 500 mL, 1 L
Directions
Use approximately 250 mL of LGND Ar Mathor™ for every 200 litres of aquarium water. The media may be placed directly inside a filter chamber or housed within a filter bag for easier handling during maintenance.
For best results, position LGND Ar Mathor™ in an area of moderate to strong water flow where oxygen-rich water can continuously circulate through the porous structure. The media performs exceptionally well in external canister filters, sump filtration systems, and wet-dry filtration setups.
When establishing a new aquarium, biological colonisation will begin immediately but may require several weeks before maximum filtration efficiency is achieved. During this period, bacterial supplements such as LGND Medium™ may be used to accelerate biofilter maturation.
The media should remain submerged during maintenance whenever possible to preserve established bacterial colonies.

Maintenance
LGND Ar Mathor™ requires minimal maintenance. Over time, mechanical debris may accumulate on the outer surfaces and partially restrict water movement through the media. When flow reduction becomes noticeable, gently rinse the media using aquarium water removed during a water change.
Avoid cleaning the media with untreated tap water whenever possible, as chlorine and chloramine may reduce beneficial bacterial populations. Excessive scrubbing is unnecessary and may disrupt established bacterial colonies.
Because most biological activity occurs within the protected internal pore structure, occasional rinsing generally has minimal impact on filtration performance. Under normal aquarium conditions, the media does not require replacement and can remain in service indefinitely.
FAQ
How is LGND Ar Mathor different from traditional biological media?
Traditional plastic bio-media primarily provides external surface area for bacterial growth. LGND Ar Mathor™ offers both external and internal colonisation zones, allowing significantly greater bacterial density within a compact volume.
Does LGND Ar Mathor help reduce nitrate?
Yes. The internal pore structure creates varying oxygen levels that can support both nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial communities. This contributes to the natural biological reduction of nitrate over time when aquarium conditions are appropriate.
Will LGND Ar Mathor affect pH or water hardness?
No. The media is chemically inert and does not alter pH, KH, GH, or other water chemistry parameters.
How often should the media be replaced?
Under normal aquarium conditions, replacement is generally unnecessary. The media is designed for long-term use and should only require occasional cleaning.
Can LGND Ar Mathor be used in freshwater and marine aquariums?
Yes. The media is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater filtration systems.
How long does it take for beneficial bacteria to colonise the media?
Initial colonisation begins immediately, but a fully mature biological filter may require several weeks depending on aquarium conditions, temperature, and bioload.
Can I use LGND Ar Mathor as the primary biological filtration medium?
Yes. Many aquarists successfully use LGND Ar Mathor™ as the primary biological component within their filtration systems.
Safety
LGND Ar Mathor™ is intended exclusively for aquarium use. Rinse thoroughly before first use to remove any dust generated during packaging and transport. Minor variations in colour, texture, shape, and pore structure are normal and do not affect performance.
Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not ingest. Avoid inhaling dust generated during handling. If sensitive to airborne particles, rinse the media before opening fully and use in a well-ventilated area.
Always disconnect electrical filtration equipment before performing maintenance. Store in a dry location when not in use. Under normal aquarium conditions, LGND Ar Mathor™ is safe for fish, shrimp, aquatic plants, and biological filtration systems.
