How to Use Avernus AlBlackEX Against Black Beard Algae

LGND Avernus AlBlackEX

Black beard algae (BBA) forms dark, brush-like tufts on wood, stone, plant edges and equipment. It clings tightly and rarely disappears on its own. The most reliable approach combines consistent maintenance, which removes what feeds the algae, with targeted spot treatment using Avernus AlBlackEX.

Step 1: get the maintenance right

  • Weekly water changes of around 50%. They remove excess nutrients from food, fish waste and decaying organic matter.
  • Vacuum the substrate at every water change. Work over the whole surface to lift debris without churning the substrate.
  • Trim plants regularly. Removing old and damaged leaves improves circulation and helps the filter pick up debris from the substrate and around decorations.
  • Clean the filter media. While you are fighting BBA, clean the media every three months; once the problem is solved, every six months is usually enough. Always rinse media in tank water taken out during a water change, never in tap water.

Step 2: spot-treat with Avernus AlBlackEX

Treatment is easiest during a water change, while the water level is lowered. Draw Avernus AlBlackEX into a syringe and apply it directly onto the affected areas.

Between water changes you can repeat the treatment every 24 hours with the tank full: place the syringe close to the algae and apply the product in the same way.

Step 3: remove the dead algae

Over the following days the treated tufts lose their dark colour and turn pale. This shows the algae is dying. Brush the remains away with the Algae Master Brush and siphon them out at the next water change.
